The CS Johnson Story.

Johnson Marine started as a hobby in 1958 when Curt Johnson Jr. developed the Handy Lock Turnbuckle. Six years of part-time marketing led to Curt Jr. resigning his position as manager of engineering for a major machinery manufacturer to develop a line of stainless steel turnbuckles and fittings in 1964.

The line was readily accepted by many major sailboat OEM's, and Johnson's continuing ability to develop, manufacture and distribute a superior product, has made Johnson Marine the industry's number one supplier of Life Line fittings. Innovation and dedication to excellence are the cornerstones of the family-owned and run business, where today sons Burt (CEO) and Curt III (President) continue the tradition.

Like so much of the hardware we carry, most Johnson products will last as long as your boat does.

Compared to lower quality gear that might cost a little less, but need replacing every few seasons, this focus on quality is a very green way of doing things.

If you look at the environmental impact of buying a quality item one time, versus multiple lower grade items many times we hope you will agree that the first choice not only saves you money, but helps the Planet too.

Most marine hardware can be divided into two distinct groups these days.

Cheap junk made with little, if any, thought to the impact its production has on the environment or the workers involved - or high quality gear made from materials designed to last, by companies that care.

We prefer to carry the latter.

Plastic and nylon parts are durable for a while and they satisfy price sensitive shoppers. Their production, however, creates numerous toxins, and eventually enough sunshine or stress will cause them to break.

Chrome, nickel, and zinc plating can protect metal surfaces for years, but their initial production, especially in third-world countries can cause devastating harm.

Painted parts are effective for a while, but paint production is usually nasty, and as it chips and goes over the side, paint carries its own poisons along.

In an imperfect world we know these choices are not entirely without their faults.

Sure, this might sound like a little thing, but if we can discourage waste, especially of products like hardware that are made almost exclusively from natural resources, we believe it is both good business and good for the Planet.
