Hex bolt sizes generally have three components - shank diameter, threads per inch, and length.
For example, a 1/4"-20 x 2" bolt measures 1/4" in diameter with 20 threads per inch and a 2" shank.
The length on hex bolts is measured from the underside of the head to the end of the fastener.
